Black silhouettes of Victorian children painted on the convex side of the bubble glass; therefore it is called reverse painting.The backgrounds are paper prints. The boy on a rocking horse brandishing a wooden sword preceeding the girl with the American flag has the background of waves breaking on shore. The tea party background has 3 thatched roof cottages set in the country. The decorated gold tone wooden frames are 5.75 inches by 7.75inches.
These were created by the Benton Glass Company of Benton Harbor, Michigan which moved to Cleveland in 1946 and went out of business in 1953. According to S. Mace in the book: ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SILHOUETTES , " the silhouettes were sold in variety stores, dime stores, novelty stores or given as promotional gifts from 1920 through early 1950's."
